TRAI tells BSNL to mend its ways

Directs BSNL to restore its services in Punjab
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) directed Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to restore all points of interconnection disconnected by it in the Punjab Service area.
To ensure the effective interconnection between service providers and to protect consumer interest, the authority directed BSNL to immediately restore interrupted service and report compliance latest by 21st of October 2011.

BSNL disconnected Airtel, Vodafone and Idea customers from its network over the payment of dues which heavily affected the fixed line and mobile subscribers in the state. The action taken by BSNL resulted in the non completion of calls, disruption of service and inconvenience to the subscribers of both the interconnecting service providers and leads to deterioration in the quality of service provided by the service providers and is against the interest of consumers and service providers.  The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) also appreciated the efforts of the regulatory body and its outlook towards prioritizing customers’ interests and preventing disruption of services which are of utmost importance in today’s digital age. TRAI, in its directive, has also referred to; and paid due importance to the earlier order by TDSAT on 30th September 2011, requisitioning BSNL to restore connectivity.
